I am a professionally trained artist. I studied sculpture and fine art drawing and painting in Wales before returning to my native Derbyshire to finish my degree. I am now based in the  Derbyshire Dales, situated on the edge of the Peak District. I feel blessed to live in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside, but living by the sea for so many years cultivated a deep love and longing for the coast, the reason seascapes feature heavily in my work.

Being out in nature makes me feel alive, bringing a heightened awareness and energy, engaging all my senses. I try to capture something of that feeling in my paintings and I hope that others will make that same connection through my work. I aim to represent not only the light, beauty, raw energy and sense of place as I see it, but also the way we all emotionally connect to our natural environment.

My process usually starts out on long walks with my dog, Alfie. When something catches my eye I take photographs and / or make sketches. I often write notes to remind myself of a particular colour or how something looked or how the light and clouds moved, all the time noting how the visual effects and moods change. Back home in the studio these images and notes are my starting point. I use a variety of tools to create my work, building up subtle layers of translucent oil paint for the sky before moving down the canvas and working in more expressive layers of thick impasto paint in the foreground.
